EU Residents

European residents who hold the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), E111 or equivalent may obtain essential prescribed medicines in case of emergency.  Medicines must be prescribed by a doctor who has a contract with the Health Services Executive (HSE).  The doctor issues the prescription on a particular form.   A HSE levy of €2.50 per item is payable.

Download “European Health Insurance Card” app for your Smartphone

A smartphone app has been produced to give guidance on how to use the European Health Insurance Card in the 27 EU countries, Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. It includes general information about the card, emergency phone numbers, covered treatments and costs, how to claim reimbursement and who to contact in case you have lost your card. The app is available in 24 languages with an easy option to switch from one language to another. Click here for more information.
