Flu Vaccine Update
Flu is widely circulating in the community at the moment with many patients requiring hospitalisation. Sadly, there have been fatalities. The number of patients suffering from the flu is expected to peak over the next few weeks. We are urging all patients, particularly those in high risk groups, to get the flu vaccine as soon as possible as it will provide some protection against the flu.
Our annual seasonal flu vaccine service has started. The flu vaccine is recommended for all those aged 65 and over, for those with long term medical conditions, for health workers, and for women who are pregnant. In addition, we also recommend the vaccine for household contacts of people with increased medical risks.
The flu vaccine is free to most patients depending on their age, health service entitlements and health status. Some patients need to pay a charge. Our pharmacists will be delighted to advise you.
Fortune’s Pharmacy also provides a pneumococcal vaccination service. The pneumococcal vaccine protects against a type of bacteria that can cause serious illnesses such as pneumonia, meningitis and septicaemia. The vaccine is recommended for all those aged 65 years and over and under 65s who have certain medical risks. Unlike the flu vaccine, the pneumococcal vaccine does not need to be given every year. Some people may only need it once in their lifetime. Others may require a booster dose or doses.
