The Government of Ireland passed the Redress for Women in Certain Institutions Act in 2015. This Act provides for certain free health services to certain persons who were resident in Magdalen Laundries, and in similar laundries operated at St Mary’s Training Centre, Stanhope St, Dublin 7 and the House of Mercy Training School, Summerhill, Wexford.
Eligible persons are issued with a services card by the Health Services Executive (HSE). This card entitles them to free drugs, medicines, medical and surgical appliances (all free items are on a list provided by the HSE and updated from time to time). The item(s) must be prescribed by a GP on a GMS prescription form. The cardholder does not need to pay the HSE levy, currently €2.50 per item.
